 Hi-Def - Teen Mentoring Program
Each week youth ages 13 -18 meet weekly and learn what it means to “See God Clearly.”
Teens are paired with Christian volunteer mentors to participate in lessons centered on values and principles drawn from God’s Word,
coupled with present day applications designed to help these youth deal with the daily challenges
they face. Meeting in small groups helps facilitate open discussions, reflections on the week,
and prayer requests. The entire group comes together for weekend outings to better build strong
relationships, trust, and unity. This program intensifies relationships often first established
during summer camp, and its success shows how important it is for Shiloh to remain involved during
the school year when their needs for support are so critical.
School Based Programs
These programs are located in the South Bronx, an area of NYC filled with paralyzing poverty and
destructive influences. We currently have relationships with three inner
city schools where we work during the school year. Programs focus on new
ways of learning, providing supportive resources through tutoring and mentoring,
as well as good old-fashioned fun!
Music Program
In partnership with The Piano
School of New York and Public School 179, 4th and 5th grade students are learning
valuable skills about music and the piano. Each thirty-minute lesson teaches
students not only these important tools but also about dedication and commitment
to new ways of learning.
One-to-One Tutoring Program - Spring Break
Groups of university
students travel to New York City during their winter and spring breaks to tutor
children at one of three inner city schools in the Bronx, giving an extra “push”
to be ready for city and state tests, and a little extra attention to students who
are struggling to learn. Children in third, fourth, and fifth grades are matched
with a college volunteer who works one-on-one with them during their daily
class schedule, including recess and lunch, as well as observing
and assisting the entire classroom as needed. These college volunteers also offer
much needed support to the teachers by providing more than 3,500 service hours each year. |

Summer Camp
Shiloh
provides a Christian summer camping experience where children from New York City’s
toughest neighborhoods can enjoy a variety of fun-filled games, creative classes
and adventure activities, as well as spiritual “cross training” time to enrich
their lives both socially and spiritually. Because of the loving, supportive
environment, we have seen children’s attitudes transformed in two weeks from
distrust to reliance, anger to love, and despair to hope.
Camp Shiloh is 90 miles northwest of New York City in the
Catskill Mountains. Its 104 wooded acres has cabins for 80
campers and 30 staff members per session plus a baseball field,
swimming pool, basketball courts, recreation hall, Arts and
Crafts building, three outdoor pavilions for classes and several
hiking trails.
Most campers, ranging in age from 9 to 15, attend camp through full
scholarships provided by supporters. A total of 320 children from
urban communities of New York City and Connecticut attend one of four
sessions between mid-June and August. They are led by competent, caring
staff members who work hard to celebrate and build on the talents and
abilities of each camper.
Campers who have aged out of our summer camp program, 16-18 year olds,
can apply for our Counselor-in-Training program. This program provides
an opportunity to continue experiencing camp in a “starter” staff role.
Each CIT is assigned to a member of our program/leadership staff where they
will work side by side and learn the various roles and responsibilities of
team members at camp. This allows for individual attention and growth due
to a closer mentoring role. The goal of the CIT program is to instill four
core values: spirituality, work ethic, service, and teamwork—important
tools that allow these young people to continue to grow in the Shiloh family. |
